Cassie and I both recently read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson, which is our inspiration for this post!  Some of my best summer memories with friends involve taking road trips!  Cassie and I thought it would be fun to make a playlist that would be perfect for a road trip this summer and also share some of our favorite essentials!  Hope you all get a chance to go on one!

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour

by Morgan Matson

Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew–just in time for Amy’s senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she’s always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy’s mother’s old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she’s surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road–diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards–this is the story of one girl’s journey to find herself.

The perfect road trip playlist has to has to involve a variety of music.  You need songs you can belt out the lyrics to.  You obviously need some oldies.  Most importantly, you need to be able to DANCE!

snacks

I am quite a health nut most of the time, but when it comes to a road trip that goes out the window.  The entire purpose of a road trip is to have a good time.  This means you eat whatever the hell you want.  I love donuts, Kind bars, trail mix, milk duds, sugar daddies and some greasy kettle cooked potato chips!

drink

Nothing beats black coffee when you are the one stuck driving for hours!  Also gotta have plenty of frappuccinos- my order is:  Mocha Java Chip Frappuccino Light with a shot of Peppermint.  YUM!  But, be a smart cookie…  Drink lots of water to stay hydrated!

tips

Road trips are full of disasters.  Here are some tips to help you prepare:

1.  Always bring lip balm.  Chapped lips are a pain in the butt and you never know when you might meet a cute boy.

2.  Tweezers and band aids are a MUST.  Stupid things happen and someone is bound to get a splinter or a scrape.  Chances are good that when it happens you will be nowhere near a rest stop or first aid kit!

3.  There won’t always be a bathroom when you need to go.  Trust me.  You want toilet paper on hand.

4.  I always have to pee.  My friends never want to stop, neither does Mr. Betty.  I am a master at peeing in jars.  Screw that lid shut and throw it on the dashboard to remind your friends that they should have stopped!

5.  If you aren’t an expert at peeing in public, a Go Girl is the way to go.  You can’t screw up and you won’t make a mess!

6.  Hotels are scuzzy.  Please be kind to your feet and wear flip flops.  Otherwise, don’t start whining a few months later when you end up with a wart on your foot.

TRIPCOLLAGE.jpg

Mr. Betty was in a band for most of the time we dated!  Every summer they would go on tour.  My friend and I went on a road trip every summer to surprise them at a random location!  My favorite destinations were Michigan and Tennessee!  Seriously, some of the best times of my life!  I’ve never argued or laughed more than on a road trip!
